1993—1994 • SQUARING OF THE SPHERE

The circle is a symbol of the psyche; the square is a symbol of earthbound matter. Alchemists sought a ‘wholeness’ of humankind encompassing mind and body. One of their central symbols was the Quadratura-Circuli—the squaring of the circle.

Ancient cities such as Rome, and Jerusalem, (as well as classical, medieval and even modern cities) have been built with this configuration, where four routes traversing north to south and east to west slice the concentric rings of a circle. This configuration also evokes the mandala, an Eastern instrument used for prayer and meditation. (Man and His Symbols—Carl Jung)

Considering the universal implications of the squared-sphere, it is an ideal configuration to express reverence for the earth, the sea, the sky and humankind. This series is dedicated to each of these things as a reflection on the power of potential and the awesome interconnection between all things.
